Doctor: Arthritis may have ailed Christopher Columbus

christopher_columbus.JPG - 30681 BytesChristopher Columbus, who was struck with a mysterious illness while returning from his first voyage to the New World, may have suffered from a severe form of arthritis that eventually crippled him, an expert said Friday.

Columbus returned to the Americas several times, but his disease progressively worsened, causing fevers, bleeding from the eyes and prolonged attacks of what was thought to be gout.
